Your Audience And Writing Style

With my romance novels,
my writing style changes
depending upon
the target age of my reader
and the subgenre I’m writing in.

If my reader is younger
(early 20’s),
I use more white space, more dialogue,
less description
than if I’m writing for an older reader.
The action is fast.
I get to the “good stuff” right away.

If I’m writing Science Fiction Romance,
my descriptions are more technical,
more scientific,
more curt and a bit colder,
than if I’m writing Paranormal Romance.

“You have to know your audience.
And you need to mimic
the way they speak.
When you’re writing for your brand,
think about
where your audience lives,
how they talk, and
whether their day-to-day
work environment is more
suit-and-tie,
hard hats
or board shorts and flip flops.
The same writing style
isn’t going to appeal to all three.
You need to tailor your communications
to your audience,
right down to the way
you present it to them.”

Vary your writing
for your target audience.
