Being early to market
happens
to writers (businesses)
in the Romance Novel Industry
all the time.
One of my buddies predicted
really hot stories
with BDSM
and billionaire heroes
would have a readership (market).
She wrote a few stories
in that niche
and they didn’t sell well.
She couldn’t cover her costs.
Finding new readers (customers)
was a lot of work.
“It might be that
you’re too early
to the market.
There are early adopters,
certainly,
but maybe not enough,
or not willing to pay your price…
Being too early
also means that
your costs are higher
and your forward motion is slower.”
My writing buddy
found it to be too much work
for too little return.
She stopped
writing in that niche.
And, you guessed it,
a couple years later
Fifty Shades of Gray
became a monster hit.
If your market doesn’t yet exist,
assume you’ll be early to market.
Budget the funds
to get you through
the early days of little sales
and heavier marketing.
