Goals Should Be Controllable

One of my buddies
writes (produces product)
for Traditional Publishers (resellers).
She believes that
since Trad Publishers
take the majority of the profits,
they should do
the majority of the work.
THEY should promote
her books (products),
not her.

They do a sh*tty job of this
and every release day,
she gets upset
because she doesn’t hit
her sales goals.

Those goals are out of her control.

She produces the story.
The Trad Publisher prices it,
writes the marketing copy,
works with the booksellers (retailers),
does the promotion around it.

The Trad Publisher should have a sales goal,
not my buddy.

If you can’t truly influence a goal,
it isn’t yours to achieve.

Ensure your goals
are within your control.
