All seems lost.
The team is floundering.
They have no direction.
Then a ‘hero’
appears out of
nowhere
to pull the team together
and save the day.
That is the movie
depiction of leadership.
It is almost always fictional.
(If the movie
is ‘based’
on a real story,
the leadership part
is always always fictionalized.
Based on a real story
is, of course, NOT
the real story.
It merely means a little bit
of it is real.)
It is highly unlikely
that a leader
with no history
with the group,
a leader
who hasn’t built trust
with that group,
can be successful
immediately
at leading that group.
Leadership happens
every day.
“Our work is
what happens
in all the moments.
Leadership doesn’t
simply appear
when the script announces
it does:
it is the hard work
of showing up
when we’re not expected to,
of seeing what’s possible
when few are willing to believe.
Your defining moment
is whenever you decide it is,
and you get a new chance
to lead every day.”
The ideal time to lead
is now.
Build that trust
so when you really need
to lead,
your team will follow you.
