There’s a certain promotional vehicle
in the book world
that many Indie writers
swear
is super effective.
It is expensive
and hard to be ‘chosen’ for
but I recently landed a spot.
I lost money on this promotion.
When I reached out
to the writers who recommended it,
I was told
I was ‘doing it wrong.’
To be successful,
I had to promote
this expensive promotion.
I had to send out
a newsletter
telling my subscribers
about it.
I had to post all over
social media
about it.
I had to ask other writers
to share the promotion.
THEN it would
pay back for me.
“If I’m doing all that,”
I told them.
“Why don’t I merely
promote my book
instead of promoting the promotion?”
That was met with silence.
There ARE times
when promoting a promotion
can be effective.
When we’re participating
in a joint promotion
with other businesses driving their connections
to the promotion also,
promoting the promotion
is a great idea.
But many times,
we’ll be more successful
if we promote
our product/services
instead of the promotion.
Our goal is to sell products/services,
not the promotions.
