Looking Behind The Curtain

During this crisis,
many people are thinking of
starting their own businesses.

One of the most common
pieces of advice
given to potential business builders
is
“Make a business out of
what you currently do
for fun.”

Take a hobby or interest
and figure out
how to make money from it.

I see this in
the Romance Novel Writing industry
ALL the time.

“I love to read.
I bet I could write a book
and profit from this love.”

If it doesn’t work,
these would-be writers
believe they can return
to their great love
– reading –
as though they hadn’t
attempted to become a writer.

They can’t do this.
Not easily.

Learning how to write a story
usually changes
how one reads a story.
Writers know the ‘tricks’.
They see the structure.
They train themselves
to find places in a story
they can improve.

It is challenging
and sometimes impossible
to turn this all off.

Seth Godin
shares

“My hunch is that
once a medical student
has understood
what makes us tick,
people don’t look
quite the same anymore.

And once you understand
how the banking system works,
a credit card offer
feels a bit different as well.”

Turning your hobby
into a business
WILL change how you feel
about that hobby.

You risk losing
your love of it
forever.

Think
before you do this.

Especially in these turbulent times
when the things we love
and can still enjoy
are rare.
