There’s some conflict
in the Romance Novel Business
between
the trend following fast cash seekers
and
the will-be-writing-in-the-niche-forever writers.
The fast cash seekers don’t care
about the long term health
of the niches they temporarily play in.
They follow the mandatory rules,
ensuring they don’t get banned
by booksellers,
but they don’t do anything extra.
They will depart from guidelines
(like a romantic happily ever after
in romance)
that have been set
to keep the niche healthy
long term.
The long term players
follow both the rules
AND the guidelines.
They do MORE than
they are legally required to do.
They take on
MORE responsibility
in the niche.
“Accountability is done TO you.
It’s done by the industrial system,
by those that want to create blame.
Responsibility is done BY you.
It’s voluntary.
You can take as much of it as you want.”
If you are seeking
to be in a niche long term,
consider taking on more responsibility
than you legally have to.
