Publicity hungry Kanye West has accused
MTV of exploiting Britney Spears.
Why?
Because the execs put her on stage
before she was “ready.”
Back when I was young and arrogant,
I did a sales presentation before I was ready.
Like Britney, I didn’t practice before hand.
Like Britney, minutes into the presentation,
I knew I made a mistake.
Like Britney, the reaction was horrible and
could have ended my career
(my manager said if I ever
pulled a stunt like that again… ).
I also knew who to blame.
The difference is it sure wasn’t the execs.
Of course, Ms. Spears is old enough to be the boss of herself. No matter how many handlers, advisers, etc. she employs, ultimately, it’s her decision which gigs to take and what she’s capable of handling (unless she’s been proven mentally incompetent, temporarily or not, that we don’t know about.)
But the reality of the situation is this: great show or trainwreck, no difference to them. She delivers eyeballs. I look at this as similar to the letter vs. spirit of the law arguments. Technically, the MTV execs are not to blame. But it was pretty shoddy of them, all the same.
Looking at it from MTV’s point of view,
its a live program.
Yes, Britney didn’t show up to rehearsal
but stars have done that before.
If they banned every artist with a drug problem,
well… they wouldn’t have a show.
And what really happened?
She did a terrible job.
There was no nudity, not even any cussing.
If it hadn’t been Britney up on stage,
it would have been a non-story.
