Looking Forward

I belong to a writing organization
that is stuck in the past.
They ignore or fight
every new development
in the industry
until that development is so prominent;
they are forced to accept it.

I use them
for the topics
that don’t change quickly
like how to craft a great story
(product development process).

For topics
that change quickly
like finding readers (prospects)
or trends,
listening to this organization
is useless.
No, it’s worse than useless.
It is dangerous.

Successfully building a business
requires looking several steps
into the future.
We take our best guesses
at where the industry
is going
and what our prospects
will want.

Glance backward
once in a while.
We can learn much
from the past.

But keep looking forward
most of the time.
The future is where
our opportunities lie.
