Do We Have To Support Established Players?

Yesterday,
I posted about Katie Bouman’s contribution
to the black hole image project.

A client k reader contacted me,
asking if I would have
supported
a male scientist
as vehemently
as I had supported
a female scientist.

I likely wouldn’t have.

Because my support
wouldn’t have been needed.

It wasn’t a coincidence
that the male scientists interviewed
mentioned other male scientists.
That arrangement,
that network of support
was established decades ago.

Many of those networks
exclude women.

So we’re establishing our own.

Yes, we would love to banish sexism
(and other isms)
and simply be absorbed
into the established networks
but that’s not happening.

Many of us now realize
that strategy won’t work.

We’re trying a new strategy.
Will it work?
It worked for men
so I suspect it might
but only time will tell.

For female business builders,
the establishment of
female-friendly support networks
can be VERY powerful.

If you’re not already involved
in one or more,
consider becoming involved.

Being equal
means having access
to equal support.
