Make Your Goal For The Event Clear

I recently attended
a lunch
hosted by a writer.

This writer is thinking about
going Indie.
She needs advice
on how to do that.

At first,
I was absolutely certain
that was the purpose
for the lunch.
I was excited about that.
I was preparing
to share my insights.
I even made handouts.

Then I found out
she invited
non-writing people.
Those guests would have been bored
out of their minds
if we had talked writing.

I attended.
I made small talk.
No one brought up
writing
so I didn’t either.
I left the handouts
in my bag.

A couple days later,
she emailed me,
sharing she was disappointed
we didn’t talk about
Indie publishing.

Ugh

Make your goal for events
clear.
Invite people who can help
achieve those goals.
Don’t be shy
about bringing up that goal.
