One of the common comments
I receive when I tell others
about my Romance Novel Business,
is
“Must be nice
to spend all day
doing what you love.”
I DO love the Romance Novel Business.
PARTS of it.
Not all of it.
Some parts I absolutely hate
but I do them anyway
because those parts are necessary.
ALL of the parts,
the parts I love
and the parts I hate,
are work.
If I had the choice
between sitting on the beach,
watching the waves,
and writing,
I would choose sitting on the beach.
This seems to surprise
some people.
They (wrongly) believe
following our passions
results in unlimited motivation.
Paul O’Keefe,
an assistant professor
of psychology at
Yale—NUS College,
shares
“That means that
if you do something
that feels like work,
it means you don’t love it.”
“It’s this idea that
if I’m not completely
overwhelmed by emotion
when I walk into a lab,
then it won’t be my passion
or my interest.”
That’s not how passion works.
You won’t love
everything about building your business.
There will be days
you’ll have to force yourself
to complete tasks.
Expect this.
