I’ve made mistakes
in the Romance Novel Business
– HUGE ones.
I sometimes joke
I’ve made every mistake
that was possible.
But I’ve survived
with minimal and fleeting damage.
How did I do this?
As soon as I realized
I made a mistake,
I owned it.
I owned the mistake
and I owned the damage
it did to others.
Then I tried to make it right.
Often this came at a price.
I paid that price
and everyone,
including myself,
moved on.
“Too often,
we’re so focused on not hiccuping,
or so filled with shame
and blame
when we do that
we fail to allocate enough emotional labor
to do the most important part
–making things right.
Not with a refund
or a basket of fruit,
but by truly seeing the other person,
understanding what happened
and doing the hard work
to move forward.”
You’ll make mistakes too.
What truly matters is
how you deal with your mistakes.
