Emails On Our Schedules

An editor
at a big New York Publishing House
went on a rant
about how it is unprofessional
to email an editor
after working hours.

That editor
is out of touch.

1) The business community
is global now.
Assuming your 9 to 5
are the same hours
as everyone’s 9 to 5
is very (your location) centric.
You aren’t living
in the center
of the world.

and

2) We send email
in 2021
because we don’t need
a quick reply.
The entire idea
of email
is the recipient
can address it
on HER schedule,
not ours.

If we wanted
a faster reply,
we’d use text.

If we wanted
an immediate reply,
we’d call.

Don’t expect
emails to be sent
on YOUR schedule.

Open them,
address them
on YOUR schedule.

Use filters
or separate email addresses
if you have emails
with different urgencies.

YOU have complete power
over your email inbox.
