Unnecessary Controversy

I really wanted more people
to watch a movie
I very much enjoyed
so I posted about it
on social media.

I also talked about
(what I interpreted
to be)
the social commentary
in the movie.

Many people got upset
about that social commentary
(which was, yes,
the point of social commentary)
and I spent a morning
responding to that.

Then I thought…
what the h@ll am I doing?
Talking about the social commentary
isn’t necessary
to achieve my goal
– convince more people
to watch the movie.
All it is doing
is creating unnecessary controversy.

So I deleted my statement about it.
The angry comments stopped.
I applied myself
to changing the world
in other more productive ways.

Unless unnecessary controversy
is part of your product
or your branding,
consider avoiding it.

Keep your focus
on your true goals.
