I’ve seen many posts
about writing the great novel
or inventing the next hot product
or learning a new profession
while we’re safe inside our homes
during this crisis.
These are lofty and impressive goals.
But they shouldn’t be our most important goals.
Or even our second most important goals.
Our most important goal is
to survive this crisis,
to leave this situation
as physically, mentally, emotionally
healthy
as possible.
If we do that,
we’re successful.
Our second most important goal
is to ensure
our loved ones
do the same.
If we accomplish both of these,
we should be extremely proud
of ourselves
and we should be grateful.
Because not everyone will
accomplish these two goals,
unfortunately.
And by accomplishing them,
we’ll have the opportunity
in the future
to write the great novel
or invent the next hot product
or learn a new profession.
As business builders,
our third most important goal
might be the survival of our businesses.
Our businesses might provide
much needed cash flow
or they might be our dreams,
our way to make a difference
in the world.
Again, not every business will survive
this crisis.
Many, unfortunately, won’t survive it.
If ours do, that’s a huge accomplishment
and we should be proud
of that.
It will give
our businesses an opportunity
to thrive later.
Survival comes first…
for ourselves,
for our loved ones,
for the businesses we’re building.
We’re in a crisis situation.
Our most important goal
is to survive it.
That is what success looks like
right now.
