When I first started publishing
my stories,
I sent them to publishers.
In exchange for a huge chunk
of the income,
the publishers coordinated
the entire process.
This was the right path
for me at that time
because I didn’t have
the expertise to coordinate it.
I didn’t know
the parts of the process.
Today, I self-publish
my stories.
I’ve learned the steps
and I’ve met people
who are skilled in each step.
I coordinate
these experts
and I coordinate each step.
“If you give
one person
the entire project,
then coordination costs
go way down.
It’s all in her head,
and shortcuts present themselves.
On the other hand,
if you break a project
into tiny parts,
you can find exactly
the right person
or process
for that part,
and often,
they can be done
simultaneously.”
Both outsourcing
parts of a project
and outsourcing
all of it
have their benefits
and their costs.
Consciously decide
which route
you’ll take.
