The son of one of my friends
wants to go
into a certain science field
but he dislikes the math courses
he’d have to take
to get the recommended degree.
He’s debating
whether or not
a lifetime spent in that field
is worth the four years
of intensive math courses.
Do the ‘fun’ parts
more than offset
the ‘hard’ parts?
And there are hard parts
in every project.
Writing a book is relatively easy
for me, for example.
That’s the fun part.
Selling that book to readers,
in contrast,
is dang hard
but I do it
because the fun of writing
more than offsets
the pain of marketing the books.
“Everything worth doing
has a hard part.
If it didn’t,
it would have been done
already.
The hard part,
we can hope,
will become easier
if you allocate resources
and focus
and effort.
That’s the point of the work,
to whittle away
at the hard part.”
Before starting a business,
changing your career
or taking on a project,
know what the hard parts
are likely to be.
It should be worth doing,
even with those hard parts.
