Start With A Small Niche

One of the easiest strategies
for building a readership
in the Romance Novel Business
is to start with a small niche
and build out
from there.

If a writer starts with a huge
niche
– romance, for example –
it would take a LOT of sales
to get anywhere near
the top 100 lists,
to be noticed at all.

If a writer starts with a small
niche
– vampire romance, for example –
it wouldn’t take much
to be noticed by that readership.
Simply releasing a book
might be sufficient.

The writer’s books
then land on the
top 100 lists at booksellers
for vampire romance.
That gives her more readers.

Her readership grows
until her books get noticed
by readers of
the larger niche
– paranormal romance.
Her books land
on those
top 100 lists.

Her readership continues
to grow.
Her books finally land
on top 100 lists
for the much larger niche
– romance.

All along the way,
her marketing and sales efforts
have been helped
by being the top seller
in her increasingly larger niches.

As
Seth Godin
shares

“In all markets,
the market leader
gets an unfair advantage.
That’s because
casual and unsophisticated customers
choose the leader
because it feels easier and safer.

The strategy, then,
is not to wish and dream
of becoming a big fish.

The strategy
is to pick
a small enough pond.”

Consider starting with
a smaller niche
and building out.
