Tempered Optimism

Most business builders
are optimists.

I know this
because most new businesses
fail.
If we looked at those facts,
we would never
start businesses.

But we believe we’ll be
the exception,
that everything will work out
okay for us,
and we start businesses.

There’s a downside
to our optimism.

Seth Godin
shares

“Optimists are always
a little disappointed.

If you live with possibility,
the idea that things can get better,
that with consistent generous effort
you can make a contribution,
then you also end up
feeling just a bit let down
that it didn’t happen
this time.”

I tend to temper
my natural optimism
by exploring
the worst case scenario.

For example,
I’m trying to take
my Romance Novel Business
to the next level
sales-wise.
I’m investing $2,000
in a strategy.

If that strategy pays off,
the return will be tremendous.
If that strategy does nothing
(the worst case scenario),
I’ll throw away $2,000.
The downside isn’t that bad.
I’m taking the chance.

Consider tempering
your optimism
by looking at
worst case scenarios.
