The more established
a company is
the more difficult
it is
to change its focus.
Romance Writers Of America,
for example,
was founded 39 years ago.
It consists of thousands of members.
The focus of this writing organization
has been to serve
traditional publishing
i.e. the big New York Publishers.
The big New York Publishers
no longer lead
the Romance Novel Industry.
Most of Romance is now Indie.
RWA is trying to change
and they’re having huge challenges
doing this.
They’ve spent decades
promoting the benefits
of traditional publishing,
dismissing anything
that was new or different.
THAT is their membership base’s mindset
and they are, of course, resisting change.
RWA is currently not relevant
and it will be a challenge
for them
to become relevant again.
THIS is why
it is important
to take some time
when our businesses are new and small
to figure out what we want
our businesses to be,
to test these different brandings,
to perhaps build an acceptance
of change into our businesses.
Do it now
when it is easier
to accomplish.
