Traditional Print-Heavy Publishers
(large businesses)
like stories (products)
with mass appeal.
They often ask
“Is there a market
for this?”
and they mean a BIG market.
They then throw
a truckload of cash
at a few ‘chosen’ books
and market them everywhere.
That’s NOT how
Indie writers
(small businesses)
sell books.
They don’t have
a truckload of cash
to make ‘mass’ work.
Successful Indie writers
usually target niches.
They engage
the fans of these niches
and these fans
spread the word
about their books (products).
“Ideas spread
from person to person.
Horizontally.
Because someone
who encountered an idea
cared enough to spread the word,
to talk about it,
to insist that
friends and colleagues pay attention,
if just for a moment.
If you can figure out
how to embrace the true fans,
they’ll go ahead
and spread an idea
–not because you want them to,
but because they want to.”
Unless you have
an almost unlimited budget,
target fans first.
Build that base.
