I worked for
one of the biggest beverage companies
in the world.
It had been competing
with another beverage company
for over 100 years
and the competition
would get fierce.
One thing our CEO
wouldn’t allow us to do, however,
was bad talk
or hate the competition.
If we wanted to be treated
with respect,
we had to treat our competition
with respect.
They were different.
That didn’t make them bad.
He also told us
strong competition
led to a strong market
and that was good
for everyone.

“Our culture is obsessed
with competition and comparison;
we can’t simply appreciate things
for what they are.
Preferences are fine,
but often,
people act as if
they have to hate one thing
in order to remain loyal
to the other.
That’s bad.”
Respect the competition.
