Understand The Customer

A newer writer excitedly told me
she planned to write books
in my niche this year.
I asked her
if she wanted any coaching.
She said she was fine.
She bought a report
on the niche.

She sent me that report.
It talked about the covers
on the top selling books
in the niche.
It mentioned the key words.
It stated the average book length
and other superficial specs.

The report didn’t talk
about the reader (the customer)
at all.
It didn’t give a why
for things like book length.
It didn’t talk about series,
something that is MOST important
to this niche’s average reader.

I couldn’t use the report
to make decisions.

To make good decisions,
we need at least a basic understanding
of our prospective customers.
Consider gaining that
before you start building your business
(as it will influence ALL aspects
of that business).
