Better Doesn’t Always Sell

I’m great at weaving
a certain aspect
into my romance novels.
I might very well
be the best at this.

The thing is…
readers don’t care
about this aspect.
I do it for me
but I’ve never had
a reader comment on it.

So I don’t use it
in any of my marketing.
Mentioning it
won’t sell more books.

“It’s entirely possible
that you’re better.
Better by some axis
you’ve invented,
fallen in love with
and decided is
the most important thing
to be better at.

But if people aren’t choosing you,
talking about you,
asking you for more…
it’s either because
you picked the wrong axis,
or because you’re not better enough.”

If no one cares about it,
being better in that area
won’t increase
sales.
