Liking An Expert Isn’t Required For Learning

I recommended a writing group
to a newer writer.
The group is frequented
by a number of super successful writers
and they share the honest truths
about the business.
The BRUTALLY honest truths.

Another writer told me
she quit that group
because she doesn’t like
the writers.

It is RARE
that a mentor is someone
you’d choose as
a best friend
but, I agree, you should admire
a mentor in some way.

You should feel comfortable
approaching that mentor about
your often private problems.

You DON’T have to admire
or even like
an expert,
especially someone sharing her experiences
and knowledge with
a group of semi-strangers.

You can take the knowledge
you need from her
and ignore the rest of it.

Knowledge doesn’t have
to be obtained from a likable source
to be helpful.
