A loved one
was offered a job.
The salary was low
for the role.
He asked for an increase in salary.
The company said
that was their offer.
They weren’t willing
to negotiate at all.
My loved one
will likely take the job
but he’ll continue looking
for another one.
He wouldn’t have done that
if the company
had been open to negotiations,
Even if they had come back to him
with a thousand dollar increase
(on a two hundred thousand dollar a year salary),
he would have felt
greater loyalty to them.
Why?
Because negotiations signal
you’re willing to work with the other party.
They say you’re listening.
They say you care
that the other party is happy.
They say you’re interested
in a long term arrangement.
When hiring
or partnering with others,
consider being open
to negotiations.
That sends a positive signal.
