One of my core values
in the Romance Novel Business
is trust.
I trust my readers
and I seek to earn
and keep their trust.
This means
when a reader comes to me
and says she can’t download a story
she paid for,
I immediately send her another copy.
I don’t ask for a receipt.
I trust her.
Could a reader take advantage of me?
Sure but a reader could also
become a lifelong fan
because of the trust I’ve shown her.

“Generally speaking,
it’s worth doing things
that are essential to our core values,
even if they cost a bit more.
It might not tangibly transfer
into direct income,
but there’s some existential value
in doing it.
Maybe you can feel it,
maybe you can’t
—but I can,
and I like feeling good
about what we do.”
Figure out
what your core values are
and then do what you can
to adhere to them.
