Listening To The Artists

At the forefront of every change
is often an artist,
a writer, singer, entertainer,
someone in the arts.

Why?

Because artists operate
outside their own personal views.

I recently wrote a romance novel
with a serial killer as the hero.
I’m not a serial killer.
I had to do research
and then put myself
in the brain of a serial killer,
seeing the world as he would,
feeling his emotions,
making sense of his decisions,
ignoring my own prejudices,
bias, conditioning.

Once you do this
a few times,
it becomes second nature.
We see someone protesting
and can understand
why they’re protesting.
We see a trend
and can understand
why it is a trend.

We can put ourselves aside
and see the world
through others’ eyes.

If an artist says
something is happening,
pay attention.
Put your bias aside
and research it.

Listen to artists.
