Denis Leary And Changing TV

In an interview with Reuters,
actor Denis Leary talked about
how TV is evolving.
“Technology is changing,
so the viewership is getting broken up.
My kids watch everything downloaded;
they have no idea
what the numbers
or the names of the channels mean,
except
‘FX makes the show
that I see on my computer.’
So it’s harder to get a show on the air,
but at the same time,
there are a lot of terrific shows.”

What does this mean to marketers?

It means just because
TV advertising worked last year
doesn’t mean it will work this year.
It means we might wish
to look at online providers of content.
It means instead of
spending millions
with one network,
we might find better returns
spending hundreds of dollars
with many smaller online sites.

We can’t be lazy
and rely on the past.
What worked yesterday
won’t work today.
