The Free Critique

I’m currently taking two on-line classes.

Class A started off with a bang.
Day One, the prof offered a free critique
of any taglines or back copy.
I sent mine in,
happy that I had already recouped
the cost of the course with
the value of that critique.
After that, any other information
(and there was a lot of it)
was bonus.

Class B was more traditional,
a lecture with questions asked
at the end of the course.
I had to wait for my information and
I’m still not sure if I got my money’s worth.

If you have a choice between
giving a freebie
at the beginning
or
the end of a relationship,
choose the beginning.
Add value right away.

  1. Do you think this applies to business relationships? I generally offer my regular clients a discount for repeat business. I fear that giving a discount or perk upfront leads to haggling and the client’s perception that I am up for back-and-forth.

  2. I prefer to give
    not a discount
but something “extra” or “value added”.
You don’t want the discussion to be about price
    (that is a no win).

I see that you are an awesome graphic designer, Janet.
Once you have secured a client,
is there a little something that you can do for them right away
to give them that WOW early on?

It could be as simple as giving that brand new business
a handful of generic business cards so they can get started
(I know that I needed “bridge” cards
    while my designer was working).

Something so they can see results right away.

  3. Good idea. Got me thinking.

When I am working on a web site I will create a customized ‘coming soon’ page with the client’s logo and vital information without being asked, because I feel it’s helpful. It usually takes me no longer than 15 minutes to create, and the client can start referencing their web site right away.

Your blog is one I always read through, even when I have less time and must skim or skip others. Thanks for sharing advice and experiences that make me think and help me improve.

  4. That is a brilliant solution, Janet.

Something that adds value to the client
yet doesn’t cost you much money or time.

I know that I would appreciate the Coming Soon page.
